Consultation on tHe Haymarket development

27 November 2017

Developers behind the £200m tHe Haymarket development, have announced details of a community consultation to take place on Thursday 30th November at the Hilton Grosvenor Hotel, Edinburgh.

Residents and local businesses are encouraged to ‘drop in’ during the day to view the plans and meet with the project’s planning consultants who will be on hand to explain the amendments to the current ‘Minded to Grant’ planning permission.

In March 2011, The City of Edinburgh Council granted full planning permission for the redevelopment of the Morrison Street site to include hotels, offices, retail and a public realm. Development commenced on 6th January 2014 and engineering works, which included safeguarding the railway tunnels under the site, are now complete.

The current, ‘Minded to Grant’ planning permission, considered by CEC Planning Committee in June of this year, seeks to amend the existing detailed consent at The Haymarket granted on March 2011.

Robin Blacklock, Development Director of tHe Haymarket Edinburgh said: “Community feedback continues to play an important role in shaping this development which is the largest and most significant regeneration project to be delivered in Edinburgh for over a decade. We look forward to receiving further feedback prior to our submission early next year.”

Details of the events are as follows: Thursday 30th November, Grosvenor Hotel, Grosvenor Street. 10am – 1pm & 2pm – 7pm

Notes to Editor
tHe Haymarket Edinburgh is a joint venture project by EHDL, a partnership between Interserve PLC and Tiger Developments.

The site is one of Edinburgh city centre’s last remaining major gap sites, part of the first ‘Edinburgh 12’ initiative introduced by the City of Edinburgh Council to help progress strategically important gap sites across Edinburgh’s city centre.

Detailed planning approval was granted in March 2011 following an extensive consultation programme with the local community with the scheme gaining backing from the city’s business leaders, as well as praise by planners for the high quality of its architectural design.

tHe Haymarket will include three contemporary office buildings offering around 370,000 sq. ft. (34,000 sq.m) of space designed to meet the fast-growing demand in Edinburgh for high-quality city centre space capable of accommodating largescale occupiers on single floors. There will also be a mix of hospitality and retail, including hotel, cafes and restaurants.

When complete, the contribution to the local economy will be significant; it is expected that tHe Haymarket will accommodate over 4,000 jobs, whilst supporting over 500 during construction. It is anticipated that the total revenue through nondomestic rates will be in excess of £6m. The overall plans highlight open and accessible public space, creating a mix of continental style boulevards and pedestrian-friendly public areas. The scheme has been designed to create an easily accessible ‘walk-through’ layout from different directions, emphasizing its strategically important location, connecting the city centre to the capital’s second busiest railway station and new tram network - as well as to Edinburgh International Airport.

Architects for the scheme are Richard Murphy Architects & CDA Architects. tHe Haymarket development is being marketed by joint office agents, JLL, Dougray Smith and WYM Real Estate. Theretail agents are Eric Young & Co.
